What is the Statement of Demonstrated Ability granted for?

The Statement of Demonstrated Ability (SODA) is granted specifically to individuals with static or nonprogressive medical conditions that may otherwise disqualify them from holding a medical certificate. This allows these individuals to demonstrate their ability to operate an aircraft safely despite their medical conditions. The SODA process acknowledges that while a medical issue exists, it does not necessarily impair the individual's capability to function in the pilot role as long as the condition is stable and does not worsen over time.

In this context, individuals with progressive medical conditions or temporary conditions are typically not eligible for a SODA since their conditions could affect their ability to safely operate an aircraft in the future or are expected to resolve, respectively. Those requiring routine medical check-ups don’t fall under the criteria for a SODA either, as this process is not designed for individuals managing regular health assessments but rather for those with stable medical issues that need special consideration.
